Hi
We have 15 normalized tables. All are parent and their child tables.
If any one of the tables gets updated then we need to join with latest records from all parent and child tables. Finally Pull only the changed records.
This sql will be executed on daily basis to identify those changes and load into the target table incrementally.
Current table have millions of records which is degrading the performance by doing entire table scan and cross join to identify the changes if any.

Is there any better way to do this kind of join?. This should be done incrementally every 12 hours.

Please point if we already have discussion on this. I will post the sample data with all scenarios.

Thank you.

Yes?

By the way, I wish you would not say "record" when you mean "row".

Yes I meant "row" here.

Currently we are cross joining all 3 tables using primary key and filter the rows using OR clause with the load date to identify those rows.

Every day any change in these tables will be replicated through Oracle Golden Gate(CDC) and loaded with load date column.

You have posted code that creates the usual HR demonstration schema. Why? What does that have to do with the "15 normalized tables" you mentioned earlier?

You have twice referred to a "cross join" but you have not shown the SQL you are running. I do not see how anyone can assist without this.

Thank you for quick response.

Every day any change in these tables(separate dB) will be replicated through Oracle Golden Gate(CDC) and loaded with run date. I mean we append these data to corresponding staging tables in the target dB
Once staging table is loaded with run date(Load date) , only changed rows for the day need to be extracted from staging tables and loaded into report tables(final tables).

To achieve, Currently we are joining all 3 tables using primary key and filter the rows using OR clause with the load date to identify those rows. But performance is low.

Example query below

Select a.employee,b.department,c.locations from employees a left join department b  on a.dept_id = b.dept_id left join locations c on b.location_id =c.location_id where (a.load_dt = '2019-07-27' or b.load_dt = '2019-07-27' or c.load_dt = '2019-07-27');

So, This query will end up joining every day loaded rows and finally filter it to identify the current day changes. We want to filter first and then join. If any change in child table, then it need to be joined to the last record in parent table( parent row might be loaded on any previous days) and vice versa for parent to child join.

Please let me know if you need more details.

There is no CROSS JOIN in that code. There are not 15 tables. And that query does not run because it does refers to a column LOAD_DT that does not exist in your tables.

You had better start again.

I couldn't give 15 tables data here. Just gave an example. Load_dt column is an additional column that is populated when we load the stage table.

Indirectly it joins to all rows in all table(there will be duplicate records with same primary combination here). Primary key constraint is not enforced in the stage table. That's why I mentioned here "cross join".

So are you working on the HR demo schema or not? Have you added that LOAD_DT column to every table?

Yes I'm working on HR schema. I have copied the code from SOurce dB. I will post the staging table structure shortly. Staging tables are same as source except load_dt column.

This is getting ever more confusing. You say that you are working in the HR schema, but your query is projecting columns named EMPLOYEE, DEPARTMENT, and LOCATIONS. There are no columns in HR with those names.

Am I right to guess that you are a beginner with SQL and that this is a college homework question? If so may I suggest that you remember that in the field you must be precise. Trust me, that is good advice. When asking for help always show what you are actually doing, the tables and data with which you are really working, the result you want, the result you are getting.

I have Clearly explained in detail. Any SQL expert will easily understand what I'm asking here. If you don't know just Ignore it . Let someone else respond it.

I gave the SQL as an example. I can't post the actual query here. I already have the working sql but it is taking too long.

Let's learn first how data warehousing and history reports are built. So that you will easily understand.

Another piece of professional (actually, life) advice. Never get into a pissing match over expertise with a stranger. When you do, you will very likely be the one who needs to go home and take a shower. I've known John on multiple forums for several years and can attest that he is fully expert in both SQL and data warehousing.

You can find out every row in a particular table that was changed in the last 12 hours (for example) use the following query

SELECT *
FROM My_Table
WHERE ORA_ROWSCN >
(SELECT TIMESTAMP_TO_SCN (systimestamp - .5) FROM DUAL);

Only if the table is created with ROWDEPENDENCIES option, otherwise ORA_ROWSCN is a block level information not a row one.

Very true, but it setting up the table using row dependicies would allow the user to use ORA_ROWSCN. Of course the real solution is to have an insert/last modification column in the row so a simple query can pull out the correct data. Every table I create normally has a create timestamp, a last modification timestamp and the oracle user that made the change

I encourage developers to use the "standard who" columns that exist in all EBS tables, on the assumption that if it is good enough for EBS, it is good enough for anyone. How they should be populated is open to debate. They are described here,
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E18727_01/doc.121/e12897/T302934T303920.htm
